It's a long process and requires some specialized tools to make very fine linen. But if you want to make tow for cord or rope it's a little less demanding. I have batches of flax I've retted (soaked in water and dried) and am waiting to have enough to try the next steps.
There's a flax and linen processing organization here who gives workshops to keep the art of linen alive. Perhaps you could find a guild or group near you who have all the tools and can mentor?
